1. Introduction and Acceptance

Welcome to Scire ("the Service"), an AI-powered, retrieval-grounded study companion operated by Learn with Scire ("Scire," "we," "us," or "our"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Scire web application located at learnwithscire.com, including any associated administrative consoles, institutional portals, and embedded learning management system (LMS) integrations.

By creating an account, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy (Part II). If you are using the Service on behalf of an educational institution or organization, you represent that you have the authority to bind that entity to these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not access or use the Service.

2. The Service

Scire is a retrieval-grounded AI study companion designed to provide learners, educators, and researchers with authoritative, citable answers. Unlike generic AI chatbots, Scire utilizes a Hybrid Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture, combining a curated knowledge base with live academic APIs to ensure answers are factually grounded rather than invented.

Core Features Include:

• Persona-Adaptive Learning: Content, tone, safety guardrails, and imagery adapt dynamically based on the user’s learning stage (Junior, Mid-School, High School, or Graduate).
• Study Modes: The "Regular" license includes the standard study mode and Weekly Discovery. The "Premium" license adds Deep Dive (multi-source, textbook-depth synthesis), Concept Lens (micro-explainers), Daily Discovery, Ask by Voice, "Explore further" follow-ups, and Explore Further. The Junior age band is available on the Regular license only.
• Hybrid Generation Engines: Answers may be synthesized locally on-device (for privacy) or via a secure cloud model (for analytical depth), subject to your subscription tier and data-protection settings.

What Scire is Not: The Service is an educational aid. It is not a substitute for professional medical, legal, financial, or psychological advice, nor is it an emergency service.

3. Accounts, Registration, and Eligibility

• Account Creation: Accounts may be created by individual users, parents/guardians, or institutional administrators. Public self-registration may be restricted or disabled at our discretion.
• Accuracy: You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration and to update such information to keep it accurate.
• Security: You are responsible for safeguarding your password and for all activities that occur under your account. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account.
• Authentication: Access to the Service requires a valid, non-revoked authentication token. Attempting to bypass authentication or entitlement gates is strictly prohibited.

4. Age Requirements and Minors

• Target Demographics: The Service is designed for learners aged 6 and older, utilizing age-appropriate personas.
• Minors: If you are under the age of 10, your account must be created, authorized, or managed by a parent, legal guardian, or authorized educational institution.
• Consent: The registering adult or institution is responsible for obtaining any legally required consents for the minor's use of the Service and the processing of their data, in compliance with applicable laws, including India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act), COPPA (US), or GDPR-K (EU/UK).

5. Subscriptions, Trials, and Billing

• Dynamic Trial-or-Lock Model: Scire does not offer a permanent free tier. New accounts are automatically provisioned with a time-limited trial. The specific duration of this trial is dynamically assigned by our system based on your selected plan, promotional offer, or institutional agreement at the time of account creation.
• Expiration: Upon expiration of a trial without the purchase of a valid subscription or institutional license, access to premium content and features will lock.
• Billing: Fees for paid plans are billed according to the interval selected at checkout. All fees are non-refundable unless otherwise required by applicable law or explicitly stated in a separate institutional agreement.
• Taxes: All fees are exclusive of taxes, levies, or duties imposed by taxing authorities. You are responsible for paying all such applicable taxes.

6. Device Limits and Licences

• Device Binding: To protect seat integrity and prevent unauthorized sharing, licenses are restricted to a specific number of devices per user (typically one web device per licence).
• Device Management: If you reach your device limit, you must use our self-service device-move process, which requires an emailed one-time verification code to evict the old device and enrol the new one, or contact your institutional administrator.
• Prohibited Sharing: You may not share your credentials or bypass device limits to allow simultaneous use by multiple individuals.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to:

• Violate any applicable local, national, or international law or regulation.
• Harass, abuse, or harm another person.
• Attempt to bypass, disable, or interfere with safety moderation, age-gating, entitlement limits, or device-binding mechanisms.
• Scrape, systematically extract, or redistribute the Service’s content, proprietary prompts, or retrieved data at scale.
• Upload malicious code, viruses, or attempt to probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the system.
• Use the Service to generate content that infringes upon the intellectual property rights of others.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these acceptable use policies.

8. AI-Generated Content: Accuracy and Use

• Grounded but Verify: Scire is engineered to answer exclusively from retrieved, cited sources and to refuse honestly when reliable information cannot be found (returning a no_match state). However, no AI system is infallible. You are responsible for verifying critical facts against the provided citations before relying on them for exams, academic papers, or professional decisions.
• Academic Integrity: You are solely responsible for how you use Scire's outputs. You must comply with your school's, university's, or publisher's policies regarding the use of AI tools.
• Honest Refusal: If the Service cannot confidently resolve a query from its knowledge base, it will return an honest refusal rather than fabricating an answer.

9. Intellectual Property and Content

• Your Content: You retain ownership of the questions, notes, and Study Library threads you create. You grant Learn with Scire a limited, worldwide, royalty-free license to store and process this content solely to provide and improve the Service.
• Scire IP: The Service, including its software, pedagogical system prompts, persona logic, design systems, and branding, is the exclusive property of Learn with Scire and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.
• Third-Party Sources: Answers cite third-party sources (e.g., Wikipedia, PubMed, The Met, Project Gutenberg). These sources are subject to their own licenses. You are responsible for complying with the license terms of any source material you reuse or distribute.

10. Institutional and White-Label Use

• Institutional Administration: Educational institutions may manage rosters, seat allocations, billing, and content access via the Scire Admin Console.
• Institutional Responsibility: The institution is responsible for obtaining necessary parental consents, enforcing acceptable use policies among its learners, and managing account lifecycles.
• White-Labeling: Institutions may enable white-label features (such as source-hiding in standard modes) for LMS embedding, subject to the technical limitations described in the Privacy Policy.

11. Safety and Moderation

• Persona-Aware Guardrails: Scire employs deterministic and AI-assisted moderation layers. Universal safety categories (e.g., self-harm, CSAM, weapons manufacturing) are blocked for all users. Additional "young-sensitive" categories are blocked for Junior and Mid-School personas. A specific clinical-anatomy carve-out ensures Mid-School learners can study health and biology while Junior learners remain shielded.
• Distress and Self-Harm: Queries indicating self-harm or severe distress will trigger a care-first response, providing supportive messaging and encouraging the user to contact a trusted adult, rather than returning search results.
• No Guarantee: While we employ rigorous, fail-closed safety gates, we cannot guarantee that all inappropriate content will be filtered. Users and guardians should monitor usage appropriately.

12. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

• "As Is" Basis: The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Learn with Scire disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
• Limitation of Liability: To the maximum extent permitted by law, Learn with Scire shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from your access to or use of (or inability to access or use) the Service.
• External APIs: The Service relies on third-party academic APIs and cloud infrastructure. We are not liable for interruptions, rate-limiting, or inaccuracies originating from these external providers.

13. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Learn with Scire, its affiliates, and its licensors from and against any claims, disputes, demands, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or in any way connected with your misuse of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any third-party intellectual property or privacy rights.

14. Suspension and Termination

• By You: You may delete your account at any time via the Service settings or by contacting your institutional administrator.
• By Us: We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service immediately, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including breach of these Terms, non-payment of fees, or safeguarding concerns.
• Effect of Termination: Upon termination, your right to use the Service will immediately cease. Learner-scoped content (such as Study Library threads) will be permanently erased in accordance with our data retention policies via automated cascade deletion.

15. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of India, specifically the laws applicable in Tamil Nadu. Any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

16. General Provisions

• Severability: If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be changed and interpreted so as to best accomplish the objectives of the original provision to the greatest extent possible under applicable law, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
• Entire Agreement: These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and Learn with Scire regarding the Service.
• Changes to Terms: We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Material changes will be notified via the Service or by email. Continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
